Three groups, roughly. Postings — someone's employer has an office in Paris, Lyon or Toulouse and the family follows. Watford sends more of these than a town its size would suggest.

The route
Out of WD onto the M1 at junction 5, round the M25 and into Kent. Through the tunnel at Folkestone, and then the choice is made by destination: the A26 south-east for Paris and Burgundy, the A16 along the coast for Normandy, or the long south-western run on the A28 and A10 through Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers to Bordeaux and beyond.
The M25 is the variable, not the Channel. That is why a French job is usually loaded the day before it travels.
Corporate relocations, and the awkward questions
If an employer is paying, find out three things before anyone quotes: what the package covers, what it caps, and who signs it off. Relocation budgets are frequently set by somebody who has never moved a family's worth of furniture and has a number in mind that predates the customs paperwork.
We will quote in a form a relocation manager can process, and we will say plainly where a cap does not cover the job rather than trimming the service quietly to fit it.
What France asks for
- An itemised, valued inventory in French, signed by you
- Proof of the French address — a deed, or a signed lease in your name
- Evidence of transferring residence: a work contract, a residency application, or a consulate certificate of change of residence
- Identity documents matching the names on everything above
Used household effects you owned and used before the move enter without duty when you are genuinely relocating. A second home is a different category and gets assessed on declared value — worth settling before the inventory is priced.
Delivering in France
Rural deliveries are usually about the lane rather than the house: a farmhouse down a track that a full-size vehicle cannot turn in means a shuttle, which we would rather plan than discover.
City apartments are the opposite problem — a courtyard, a lift that fits two people and nothing else, and a staircase with a turn that decides what comes apart. Paris frequently needs a hoist through a window, which is ordinary there and worth costing at survey.

What is the route from Watford?
M1 at junction 5 down to the M25, round the eastern side, then out through Kent on the M20 to the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone. From Calais the A26 runs south-east for Paris, Reims and Burgundy; the A16 hugs the coast for Normandy; the A28 and A10 head south-west for the Loire, Poitiers and Bordeaux.
Tunnel or ferry?
The tunnel for most household moves — quicker, less weather-dependent and a straightforward booking for a removals vehicle. Dover to Calais is the alternative on the same road. For Brittany and lower Normandy the western sailings occasionally win, though from Hertfordshire the extra drive west usually cancels out the saving.
My employer is relocating me. Who arranges what?

What documents does France want?
A detailed inventory in French, valued; proof of your French address through a deed or a signed lease; evidence you are transferring residence — a work contract, a residency application, a certificate of change of residence from the consulate. We prepare and lodge the export side.
Do we need to be there when it arrives?
You or somebody you authorise in writing. French apartment deliveries in particular go far better when the person who knows which room is which is standing there.
What about a Paris apartment delivery?
Plan it properly. Courtyard access, a lift built for two people and no furniture, a staircase with a tight turn, and in some arrondissements a permit to stand outside at all. An external hoist through a window is a normal Paris solution, not an exotic one.
Can you store things here while the French end sorts itself out?
Yes, and on a corporate posting it is common — the family follows months after the employee. Goods sit inventoried in store in Hertfordshire and export when the French address is real rather than intended.
